For the advanced typography course (RISD, Providence), the task was to create a brochure about Waterfire in Providence. Waterfire is an art installation consisting of fire displays on rivers flowing through Providence plus music. The project requirements were: 1) to use the text written by the Waterfire creator (the text itself wasn’t my cup of tea), 2) to use one of the following formats: accordion fold, zine fold or booklet (sizes: letter or half letter), and 3) to structure the design around a ‘concept word’ (a word that, in the designer’s mind, captures the essence of Waterfire).
I chose ‘storytelling’ as my concept word and a letter size booklet format (one page was 216mm x 279mm). The design was meant to be driven by ‘storytelling’. Pdf of the project can be viewed here and the photos are below.
The illustrations are processed images of wool thread I shaped and then scanned. Typeface is Matrix by Zuzana Licko.
